Balinska also said that Frey is a character she "immediately connected with," and she's performing both the motion capture and voice work in Forspoken. The hero of Forspoken is Frey Holland, played by actor Ella Balinska. Then, over clips of combat gameplay, we overhear as Frey is apparently enlisted for political assassination? I'm sure that'll be developed more. We get a glimpse at Frey's life before stumbling into a fantasy world (mostly characterized by wanting a different one), and are introduced to Frey's companion Cuff, a sentient wristlet with an English accent. This story intro trailer from the 2021 PlayStation showcase doesn't have a ton of story info, if we're being honest. Beginning with a cinematic of a freshly-isekai'd Frey reacting with understandable distress to suddenly having to contend with things like dragons and big, spooky wolf monsters, the trailer then shows our first glimpse of Forspoken's magic parkour as Frey zips across badlands and forests. ![]() In Forspoken's debut trailer from March of 2021, we're introduced to protagonist Frey Holland by Ella Balinska, Frey's voice and motion capture artist. In some of her shown skirmishes, Frey switches between magic bolts, whips with energy tendrils, and coup-de-grace finishers with a conjured knife. On display is the variety of different combat spells and magic parkour traversal options that Frey can deploy-and it looks to be a substantial one. In the trailer, Frey picks up a sidequest to grab some crafting materials for an artisan in the hub city of Cipal, and then its out into the wilderness to fling fistfuls of magic. ![]() This 10-minute gameplay overview from August 2022 gives a pretty full sense of what the standard flow of gameplay will feel like in Forspoken, as Frey explores the open (and almost entirely corrupted) world of Athia. Another feature showcased are spellcraft challenges, which allow Frey to upgrade skills to buff abilities with augments like shorter cooldowns or lower stamina consumption. Two games that so far at least, have been met with a predominantly positive reception but naturally has little-if-any bearing on its respective sales.This Deep Dive: Magic Parkour trailer gives us a close up look at what powers Frey has at her disposal, and how they can combine to let her jump and skate around this unfamiliar land. Said titles most likely pointing to Theatrhythm Final Bar Line and Octopath Traveler II. The company ends by stating that while titles released during the last quarter of this financial year “will be the ultimate determinant”, they warn of their previous financial forecast not being met. So while you can’t fault Square Enix for releasing a significant amount of titles as of late, it would seem few (if any) have reached company expectations as far as commercial performance goes. Though they didn’t go into specifics and highlight any names in particular, the list of releases from the past financial year include the likes of: Live A Live, The Diofield Chronicle, Valkyrie Elysium, Star Ocean: The Divine Force, Harvestella and more. Noting that “many of the new small and mid-sized titles we launched this year did not perform as well as we had expected”. However, Square Enix didn’t stop there when it came to their less-than-positive perception of most recent performances. Despite some positives here and there something which Square Enix note, acknowledging that “the game has also received positive feedback on its action features, including its parkour and combat capabilities…that will lead to improvement of our development capabilities of other games in the future” A reference to the game’s middling reception prior to release - a game which we ourselves weren’t too hot on. The comments come during the company’s most recent financial results briefing for Q1-Q3 of this financial year - originally scheduled last month but has now been made public - in which they go on to state that “reviews of Forspoken…have been challenging”. In not mincing their words, Square Enix have admitted that sales of Luminous Production’s first (and only, following the studio’s absorption into the company) title Forspoken - which released last January for PS5 & PC - have been as they put it “lacklustre”. ![]()
